Bicycle Safety

Bicycling is exhilarating. Whether you wear spandex and do 70 miles per hour down a mountain side or are a casual suburban cyclist, you have probably enjoyed this American pastime. Knowing a few statistics about safe riding can help you keep enjoying this activity.

For example, if you are fond of evening riding, remember that the 4pm – midnight window is when most fatal bike accidents occur. Be mindful that low visibility, tiredness, and even drunk drivers can make night a dangerous time to ride. Also, as of 2015, bicycle accidents in which the cyclist is struck from behind account for 40% of all crashes.

Things haven’t changed much since then, so being careful of cars approaching from behind, as well as riding on the correct side of the road, will help ensure that you stay safely. There is more to learn, but experience is a hard teacher. Keep learning and ride safely!
